Dyslexia Fact Sheet will help parents
13th May 2009
One of the UK’s foremost authorities on Dyslexia, Dr Peter Gardner, has launched a free Fact Sheet on Dyslexia, aimed at parents, to coincide with Xtraordinary Week.

Xtraordinary People is a charitable initiative supported by leading dyslexia charities. Their Xtraordinary Week runs from 18th- 22nd May 2009. It is billed as "a week of fun packed initiatives and ideas to raise awareness and focus on the strengths and talents of dyslexic children everywhere."

Dr Gardner’s Fact Sheet gives guidance to the parents of children who think their child may have dyslexia.

People who have the condition can have problems with reading, writing or spelling. It is believed that one in 10 children have some form of Dyslexia, which is Greek for "difficulty with words".

Dr Peter Gardner is co-founder of Appleford School, in Wiltshire - one of the country’s leading schools for children with dyslexia and associated learning difficulties. He says Xtraordinary Week is of local and national importance.

"Despite year-on-year increases in the percentage of students achieving A* to C grade GCSE passes, many local teachers, parents and employers remain concerned that literacy standards are not improving and may indeed be falling," he says.

"Parents naturally want the best for their children. They know that good literacy skills are the building blocks to educational success and a satisfying career. But many parents are in the dark about their child’s special educational needs and how best to help them."

"Most schools do what they can but resources locally and nationally are inevitably stretched. Xtraordinary Week raises the profile of children with literacy needs and gives parents fresh hope and a new opportunity to find help for their child."

The Fact Sheet is available from: "Dyslexia Awareness Fact Sheet", Appleford School, Shrewton, Nr Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP3 4HL. For a free copy, call: 01980 621020, e-mail: secretary@appleford.wilts.sch.uk or visit the website at: www.appleford.wilts.sch.uk
