Media coverage is a great low cost way to get positive publicity for your company, product or event. Journalist and PR expert Paul Sample explains how to improve publicity for a typical business event.
1. The quickest way is to phone the news desk of your local newspaper/s, radio and TV stations - and give them the date, time and venue of your event. If you need a list of your local media, we can supply data for every town (or specialist industry). Just call us on: 0800 731 8521 or send an e-mail to: paul.sample@themustardagency.com
2. A better way (which takes a little longer) is to send your local media a short, sharp press release. The first paragraph of the press release needs to answer the following five questions:
* WHO? (Fred Bloggs Engineering Ltd)
* WHAT? (welcomes Science Minister Tom Turner)
* WHERE? (to its Henstridge Road manufacturing plant)
* WHEN? (at 11am on Friday 22nd January 2010)*
* WHY? (to show him the award-winning Spindlewheel Cleaning Widget for himself.)
You might like to put in a short quotation from the Managing Director along the lines of: “All of our research staff have worked hard to develop the Spindlewheel Cleaning Widget. This visit by the Science Minister is recognition of that hard work. Fred Bloggs Engineering is rapidly expanding our workforce and manufactuing base as demand for this World-beating device grows," says Managing Director Mike Bloggs.
A third paragraph might include some basic information about the firm: “Fred Bloggs Engineering was originally founded in 1888 to support the rapidly-growing tram industry. Based in Henstridge Road, Spongethorpe, it is now a World Leader in Spindlewheel Cleaning technology. It employs 308 staff and has representatives in 12 European countries.”
Finally put in a contact name and telephone number who the local journalists can ring for further information.
3. If the local newspaper doesn’t use the story or send a photographer, why not send a really high quality digital picture of the event. Get as many staff into the picture as possible, together with the Minister and Managing Director, and send it (with your amended press release - now in the past tense) to your local newspaper/s.
